Divorce can be funny

Just browsing Dave's Trailer Page and ran into 2 trailers right after each other that made me think "Uh Petra should watch this." followed by "Uh! I so need to watch that!"
What am I talking about, check out the trailers for "The Back-Up Plan" (48 MB, hers) and "The Bounty Hunter" (50 MB his). ROFLMAO Just glad I didn't lose my sense of humor in the divorce :P

Hasselblad H3DII-50 - 50 Mpx

When Petra first started her photo course back in 2003, they said that for all practical purposes 5 Mpx was enough resolution because at that amount you can fill a 10x15cm (aka 5x7") card with the same amount of pixels as an analogue print. We both bought an EOS 10D at that time, for € 1500. A4 prints would be fine too, albeit at a greater distance. For bigger A3 prints you'd have to get the unbelievable high resolution of 50 Mpx... Well, it's here: Hasselblad H3DII-50 Multishot. This baby will go for &euro 23,000, BTW.

Petra's new photo outlets

I don't think these should be public yet, but on a random search for news on Petra (she's still in total radio silence), I found she and PlexiPhoto have been busy with two new cool ideas: PlexiFlex and PlexiSquare.

Good ideas, I think - inline with her previous coop with IUTY - and the pics are great. :) Place for photographers to showcase their work and fans or collectors to easily by jaw-dropping gorgeous prints on Plexiglas.

Sadly, the site doesn't work yet. You can't buy anything because the code is broken and the site has that horrible '98 Dreamweaver look-n-feel, but an overhaul would be easy.

Update: actually can *can* buy this or this one. ;) The latter is only €12 a piece! It's a steal...
Update2: I ordered 2 prints and got a polite msg back saying I stumbled upon a test site that's not yet public and they couldn't sell me the prints at the price mentioned. Duuh! It's still public though...

NextGEN Gallery for WordPress

You may know I'm thinking of moving my Blogger site over to WordPress, because WP is a blog tool as well as a decent CMS and that gives the ability to create pages as well. Not just "articles" or "posts".

Just found another reason to do so because now there is a very nice plugin called the NextGEN Gallery WordPress Plugin that offers a simple and easy administration back-end to handle multiple photos, galleries and albums. Found it through a link on Petra's blog to a photo project called "100 Abandoned Houses".

Finally bought myself a new bed. Petra took our other one but left me the mattresses. I've been sleeping on the floor since march, trying to find a decent new bed for some weeks. But everything seems a big square block with legs to stand on. So boring. I've always wanted an Auping bed, but they're a bit too modern for my house. Petra was right there, when she mentioned it. :) So we got a vintage-style bed back then. Now I'm hooked, thank you very much!

Fortunately, Slaapkamergeluk specializes in made-to-order cast-iron "Spijlenbedden", built in the traditional English cast-iron way guaranteed to last 30+ years. Looking forward to the arrival of mine in 4-5 weeks! :D

First contact: Petra

Yesterday, ironically the date of our would-be 2nd anniversary, Petra and I exchanged some Emails. It concerned the mortgage at first, but after that it became personal. She asked me how I was doing and after I stopped shaking, we actually had a good "talk" and cleared up some things.
She also asked me to remove free access to her photos on smugmug because she values her privacy. So I've limited access to her gallery on smugmug. Should you need to get to it, please ask and we'll see what we can do. I am not, however, going to remove all other pictures of her (ca 400) all over smugmug. She is part of my life and thus my gallery, and IMHO I already have respected her privacy by only naming her first name. Anyone who knows about her and me will be able to put things to together, but those who don't will not easily and not without specific searches. Links to blogs back and forth are too manually intensive to edit.
And if not, I'll be happy to talk about it later …

amazing change

5 months ago i had no idea my life was gonna change so drastically. Dec 6th petra told me she had been in love for a week with a guy from a plane and a 2 hour talk. A week or 2 later she cheated on me. I was stunned but saw the problems, for the first time. I was shocked about those too, more than the cheating. I wanted to save our marriage and try and set a few things right. A week later we went to Cuba. Weird. But we calmed down and talked some good talks. Jan 11th we came back. I was ready to start over and make changes. Petra was distant. She was gone a few days to help a sick friend. Jan 23rd she said she was no longer in love with me and wanted a divorce... She moved into the spare room. 4 weeks later she had found a place. Feb 28th she moved out. Mar 20th we signed the papers at lawyer. April 19th i had a good weekend and seemed to start to accept things. I wanted to talk to petra and end things a little positively... April 24th we met one last time at lawyer for some stupid si…

Fais Moi Une Place

Fais-moi une place
Au fond d' ta bulle
Et si j' t'agace
Si j'suis trop nul
Je deviendrai
Tout pâle, tout muet, tout p'tit
Pour que tu m'oublies

Fais-moi une place
Au fond d' ton cœur
Pour que j' t'embrasse
Lorsque tu pleures
Je deviendrai
Tout fou, tout clown, gentil
Pour qu' tu souries

J' veux q' t'aies jamais mal
Q' t'aies jamais froid
Et tout m'est égal
Tout, à part toi
Je t'aime

Fais-moi une place
Dans ton av'nir
Pour que j'ressasse
Moins mes souvenirs
Je s'rais jamais
Eteint hautain lointain
Pour qu'tu sois bien

Fais-moi une place
Dans tes urgences
Dans tes audaces
Dans ta confiance
Je s'rai jamais
Distant, distrait, cruel
Pour q' tu sois belle

J' veux pas q' tu t'ennuies
J' veux pas q' t'aies peur
J' voudrais q' tu oublies
L' goût du malheur
Je t'aime

Une petite place
Ici, maintenant
Car le temps passe
À pas d' géant
Je me ferai
Tout neuf, tout beau, tout ça...
Pour être à toi

Vacation photos

I finally uploaded photos from my vacation in Cuba as well as Val Thorens. Please check SmugMug, if interested. Photos from Cuba have been split in 13 galleries separated by city or place. Otherwise there would simply be too many. Petra and Jans have more, but protected.

Update: Ironically, this was the day when the divorce was granted by the judges.

Signing divorce papers today

I'm signing the divorce papers today. I don't want to but I am left with no choice. Other option is a long and tedious legal battle that costs thousands, no one wins and I'm still divorced. This way is cleaner but harder. It's so fucking quickly... :(
TeekensKarstens handled it pretty nicely though. Friendly, fixed price. oh well

Tomorrow morning, I'm going snowboarding in Val Thorens with friends. Petra was supposed to come, back in the Fall when we're still together. She was already hesitant, so she must have been busy with the separation already... *sigh* "life's a bitch and then you marry one", never thought it could be so real

Home make-over

Well, Petra is gone. She moved out last weekend. The house is really empty even though most of the furniture is still here. It's weird. I guess the soul is gone or something. It feels chilly, lonely and cold. Most of the walls are empty and there is a lot of space suddenly.

It's not all bad though... I lost the Wii but gained a PS3. I lost the Ferguson Hill plexiglass speakers but gained a Logitech Z-5500 THX surround set-up. I lost analogue audio, gained Dolby Digital with fiber optical connections from both the PS3 and Mac Mini! Woohoo! Amazing!

I bought some cool wall art at Blik but sadly they're in back order and won't get here for a while. :( Oh well, can't win them all. I checked the local gardening center and found a ton of beautiful plants that I can use both in the scorching heat in the back window sill or the sunny, cooler front window. Now if I only found some nice pots to use. The window sills aren't very wide...

I also bought 2 great Wüsthoff chef kn…

Restaurant Rousseau

After Cuba, I had decided to reserve a table for two at Restaurant Rousseau in Den Haag. As long as I've been here, I wanted to eat here. "As French as you can outside France!", they said. And they were right!

Sadly, shortly after I had made the reservation, Petra told me she wanted to divorce me. However, I could not move myself to cancel the reservation. Not after all this. So I wanted and thought and finally took an old girlfriend with me and treated her to a delicious evening of fine French food. My god, it was great! We had the menu gastonomique with 6 courses and it took almost 4 hours. But it was worth it! Highly recommended!

Petra and I talked about the distribution of things this week. Who wants what? Really weird, confusing and it gave me a terrible taste in my mouth.

She also found a new place to live. A nice little apartment for rent that resembles this house in many ways. I think she can even move in in March already. I like the pictures of the place, looked really cozy and I am happy to know she'll have a nice place for herself where she'll feel comfortable, but at the same time it tears me apart that she really physically is moving out and taking stuff with her. The house will still be home yet unfamiliar without her. I can't seem to grasp that I have to let her go, especially since I don't really particularly want to. It's the hardest thing I have ever done...

Update: music to the post

World Divorce Statistics

Today, Petra gave me the worst possible news: she does not see how we can continue our relationship despite our efforts. She does not believe common counseling will do any good except prolong the process. She no longer thinks she wants to grow old with me. :( A divorce is the only option.

I'm officially heart broken and numb. Being part of 34% (2007) of all divorces in the Netherlands is not a good feeling and something I least expected.

Back from a 3 week vacation to Cuba with Petra and her dad. It was great, wonderful weather, great country, terrible but nutritious food (no spices whatsoever!) and beautiful sights. Only bad thing was my allergies and the hotel beds. That became cumulatively worse and resulted in an infection in both eyes and a terrible snot head with headaches. My eyes are still bad but it should dissipate this week. Pfff, so glad it is nice and chilly here. :)

Petra should have uploaded the photo book to blurb by now, so we may have it this weekend already, otherwise next week. I'll upload my pics this week to Smugmug, so you can all be jealous. Oh and smugmug made me a Power User for free for life because I was among the first 200 customers and have been with them for so long! :) Cool eh?! SO now I can adapt my lay-out with CSS and upload videos too. Coool!

update: Petra has photos!
update2: My photos online too

Petra's Inspirational Cards

Yesterday, Petra's Inspirational Cards were delivered and we now have boxes full of them here, stacked high out of the way as much as possible. :) She already sold 150 200 as a gift for business relations. A few people have also asked for them. :)
If you'd like an Eyeopener set of 55 beautifully photographed cards with a little oneliner to make to you think and reflect, check out FeelGoodies, who are her "Authorized Reseller". :D Hihi sounds so cool!

Update: added deeplink to cards

Doen! reunion

On Monday, Zamen invited the staff of Doen! from this Summer over to Square for a reunion and thank-you dinner. I tried to make a picture of everyone, as we were (mostly) glad to see everyone again after 2 months of Fall/Winter. Sadly, I had to leave before midnight because I'd turn into a pumpkin I had locked myself out and Petra was not gonna open the door at 4am or so. So I missed all the drunk, gory photos. ;) Hope someone else took those. :)

Birthday presents!

I had one of the best birthday parties last night! Thanks to everyone who joined me! It was almost as I remember from university... Lots of people were there and not everyone knew each other. But it turned out great and I had a blast! I also got great gift, so that's even better! :)
Tried out my USB keys, to complement my Eee PC 900 and was slightly disappointed to note U3 is a Windows/Mac only thing. Not all is lost though, because Linux comes with a great many tools to do the same anyway. Would've just been easy. I'll use one 8 GB to store boot images, tools and more and brand one as my mobile office with Truecrypt, Email, firefox, Skype, Pidgin IM, FileZilla and more.
My parents and Isa gave me the DVDs to Armin's Imagine tour last April in the Jaarbeurs Utrecht as well as the registration of the Elements of Life tour on Copenhagen! Wonderful! Awesome parties, still sad a missed the party in Copenhagen! Looks awesome!
Thanks also for the liquors, the monetary gifts,…

Crazy Pianos Scheveningen

Got a call from friends from Doen! that there was a club night in Crazy Pianos Scheveningen and if was coming? :) Deborah was teasing me she'd even wear a skirt for the occasion, as she never does, and at midnight it would be my birthday. :) Oh well, Jessica and Petra wanted to celebrate the founding of Evi Leyes and Eager, so to hit multiple birds (pun intended!) with one stonedrink we went there...

Installing PCLinuxOS Mini-Me to an eeePC 900

As I am home alone today, I can nerd all I want with the heat turned dow to a comfortable 19°ree; Celsius, Trance & Techno & livesets blasting from the Mac Mini MediaPC and a pot of fresh espresso nearby! w00t

Decided to give the Mini-Me disto a try, as I read good things about it. Abusing Petra's USB Lipstick again as it is the only &$#%@& bootable USB stick in the house, I tried the Live OS and was amazed! It uses KDE but looks very crisp and clear and the OS is just blazing compared to Eeeubuntu I have been using the last week. :) Very pleased! So I am installing it, however MiniMe wouldn't start WiFi. On my netbook, that is a big Must Have so I checked Google and found Installing Mini-Me to an eeePC 900 (2.6.26 kernel - everything WORKING!!). I'll update here as I progress...

Update: Alright, now at my 3rd reinstall of minime. Got the WiFi working with madwifi update. Then enable the testing repo as well to get better support and install remaining …
